Riverina and Darlington Point
The combined 150MW / 300MWh Riverina and Darlington Point Energy Storage Systems is located adjacent to TransGrid’s Darlington Point Substation in the Murrumbidgee Shire, South West NSW.
Developed by Edify, the lithium-ion battery serves to add more flexible dispatchable capacity to the NSW market and complement the significant presence of renewable generation in the region. It consists of three independent but co-located projects:
- 60MW / 120MWh Riverina Energy Storage System 1
- 65MW / 130MWh Riverina Energy Storage System 2
- 25MW / 50MWh Darlington Point Energy Storage System
EnergyAustralia has market control of two of the three independent, but co-located projects – the Riverina (65MW/130MWh) and Darlington Point (25MW/50MWh), for at least 10 years.
The project was developed to meet the requirements of Shell Energy and the NSW Government, with Shell Energy signing a long-term services agreement to access operational rights to the 60MW / 120MWh Riverina Energy Storage System 1.
Edify partnered with Federation Asset Management to deliver the project. The investment was the seed asset for Federation’s Sustainable Australian Real Asset fund (SARA), a pure play Australian energy transition fund.
Critical to achieving Australia’s carbon emission reduction targets is the ability to rapidly increase the supply of renewable and secure energy available to government, businesses and consumers. The delivery of the Riverina and Darlington Point Energy Storage Systems provides innovative solutions to our complex energy challenges.
The project is on Wiradjuri country, the largest Aboriginal Nation in New South Wales. Known as the “people of 3 rivers” the Wiradjuri people are proud traditional custodians of the land with a deep understanding of how to live in harmony with the environment.
Jayden McLachlan, a proud and talented Wiradjuri artist from Wagga Wagga NSW was commissioned to paint an original artwork to represent the new development on Wiradjuri country. To view the artwork and read Jayden’s reflection, head to Our Communities page.
