All solar panels that Edify consider are supplied by Tier 1 manufacturers and utilise anti-reflective (AR) coatings as standard. This coating minimises the reflective losses from the solar panel whilst also trapping more light to generate electricity.Fresnel’s equation predicts that roughly 4% of the sunlight is reflected off the panel when the sun hits the panel at 90 degrees. Every light photon absorbed or lost makes a difference in the efficiency electricity generation, which is why significant investment and research has gone into AR coatings. AR coatings can now reduce the reflectance to less than 1% which increases the energy captured to improve the economics of the project. This is why large solar systems are now commonplace on Australian airports and other locations where potential glare impacts would be highly scrutinised. For example, a 6.0 MW system is installed at Brisbane’s airport, representing the largest installation at an Australian Airport and largest commercial rooftop solar system in the Southern Hemisphere, consisting of 22,000 PV modules spanning an area twice the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Other notable airports in Australia with solar systems include Adelaide (1.28 MW) and Mildura (100 kW).
