Pioneer
Located in the Mackay region of Queensland, approximately 16km west of the Mackay City, the Pioneer Energy Storage System will be on the traditional lands of the Yuwibara people.
Currently in development phase, the project will have a 200MW four-hour storage capacity, making it one of the largest in Queensland on completion.
During construction, which is likely to take 12 months, the project will employ up to 40 people. The battery is designed to operate for up to 50 years and is committed to a local recycling program to ensure the sustainable disposal of battery cells at the end of their life.
The Mackay Region currently hosts around 21,250 rooftop solar PV installations (33.5% of households) as of 2024. The combined total capacity of these systems is approximately 139MW. To complement this, Edify’s 200MW battery can provide 24/7 network services, such as solar firming, by absorbing local excess energy throughout the day and subsequently discharging this stored energy during evening peak periods. By connecting to an existing substation, local and regional customers will benefit from such services, as the project’s existing substation interacts with Ergon’s local distribution network and Powerlink’s regional transmission network.
